Q: Does being in network mean my sessions are covered?

No. In network means a rate has been negotiated. Whether your plan pays depends on your deductible, benefit design, medical necessity and sometimes authorisation. Always verify with your own plan.

Q: Do you provide superbills for out-of-network claims?

Ask during your consultation for a straight answer for your situation. Whether a plan reimburses an out-of-network claim, and at what rate, is between the client and their insurer.

Q: What happens if I need to cancel?

The cancellation policy is provided in writing before the first session so there are no surprises.

Using insurance

The practice is credentialed with the plans listed above and bills them directly, so you are not paying the full fee up front and waiting on a reimbursement. The contracted rate, rather than the private-pay fee, is what your share is calculated from.

Whether your particular policy pays is a separate question from whether the practice is in network, and it is the one that costs people money. Plans within a carrier differ from one another, deductibles reset, and a directory listing is not a benefits check. Tell us the plan name when you get in touch — the plan name, not the member ID — and we will verify it and tell you what we are told before you have committed to anything.

Insurance accepted

In network and billed directly. Each plan works differently — referrals, authorisations and deductibles are not the same animal across a commercial PPO, a TRICARE plan and a VA community care referral — so each one has its own page.

Eight questions for your insurer

Call the member services number on the back of your card. Write down who you spoke to, when, and what they said — a reference number if they will give you one.

1“Do I have outpatient mental health benefits?”Some plans separate mental health from the rest of the policy, and it may be administered by a different company entirely.
2“Is this provider in network for my specific plan?”Directory listings are frequently out of date. Give them the practice name and get the answer from your insurer, not from a website.
3“What is my deductible, and how much of it have I met?”Until a deductible is met you may be paying the full contracted rate yourself, even in network.
4“What is my copay or coinsurance per session?”Coinsurance is a percentage, so the amount changes with the session rate. Ask for the dollar figure.
5“Do I need a referral or prior authorisation?”Some plans, particularly HMOs and some TRICARE plans, will not pay without one — even after the sessions have happened.
6“Is there a limit on the number of sessions per year?”Worth knowing before you are twenty sessions into a piece of work.
7“Is telehealth covered at the same rate as in-person?”Usually yes now, but it is still worth confirming rather than assuming.

Which insurance do you accept?

The practice is in network with Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, TRICARE, Humana Military and TriWest, and bills them directly. Being in network is not the same as your sessions being covered, so tell us the plan name when you get in touch and we will confirm where you stand before you commit to anything.

What does a session cost without insurance?

What is a Good Faith Estimate?

Under the federal No Surprises Act, people who are uninsured or not using insurance have the right to a written estimate of what their care will cost before it begins. You are entitled to ask for one, and you will be offered one.

The cancellation policy is given to you in writing before your first session, so that there are no surprises. Life happens, and it is a conversation rather than a trap.
