Using Humana Military at The Denning Center
Humana Military is a TRICARE regional contractor rather than an insurer in its own right. The practice is in network with it, and the first thing worth checking is whether it is the administrator your card currently points to.
What Humana Military is
It administers TRICARE for a region: managing the provider network, processing referrals and authorisations, and paying claims on behalf of the Defense Health Agency. Your benefit comes from TRICARE. Humana Military is the organisation you deal with about it.
The regional point, because it moved
Humana Military administers the TRICARE East region. Under the current contracts Texas is in the West region, administered by TriWest. So if you are a San Antonio beneficiary on a current card, TriWest is usually the administrator you need — see the TriWest page.
Humana Military still matters here for a specific and common group: people who transferred in from an East-region state, families mid-move, and anyone whose referral or authorisation was issued before their region changed. If your paperwork says Humana Military and your address says Texas, that is worth one phone call before your first session rather than a claim denial after it.
Referrals and authorisations
Where a referral is required, it is issued and tracked by the regional contractor, and it has to exist before the sessions it covers. If you already hold an authorisation for outpatient behavioral health, bring the number to the first appointment. If you are not sure whether you need one, ask — the answer depends on your plan and your beneficiary category, and the TRICARE page sets out how those differ.
If insurance turns out not to be the right route
Private pay is $130 for a standard 50-minute session, with no claim, no authorisation and no session limit set by anybody else. For some people that genuinely works out better, and we will say so if it does. Full fees and the questions to ask your plan.

Questions
Humana Military, specifically
My card says Humana Military but I live in San Antonio. Is that wrong?
Not necessarily wrong, but it is worth checking. Texas is in the West region under the current contracts, so most San Antonio beneficiaries are administered by TriWest. Cards, portals and existing referrals lag behind a regional change, which is exactly when claims go astray.
Does an authorisation from my last duty station still work?
Sometimes, and sometimes only until a set date. Because it is the regional contractor that issues and honours it, a move between regions is the point at which to re-check rather than to assume.
