The Denning Center — counseling and accelerated resolution therapy

Finding a therapist

Best Telehealth Trauma Therapists in Texas (2026)

Texas-licensed trauma therapists who work by secure video with clients anywhere in the state, and what makes online trauma therapy work well.

Disclosure: this guide is published by The Denning Center, and Jim Denning, MA, LPC, is listed first because it is his practice's website. That placement is not a claim that he is more skilled or more effective than anyone else here. The other practices were chosen using the criteria below; none of them paid to be included, and none reviewed this page.

Research on trauma therapy delivered by video, including prolonged exposure and cognitive processing therapy, has generally found results comparable to in-person care, and the VA uses it widely. Eye-movement therapies such as EMDR and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) are also offered online by some clinicians, though others prefer to start them in person.

Two practical rules apply. A therapist must be licensed in the state you are in during the session, so for Texas residents, a Texas license. And you need a private place to talk, which for some people is the hardest part.

  1. 1. The Denning Center — Jim Denning, MA, LPC

Tesoro Drive, North Central San Antonio · in person and telehealth across Texas

    Our practice

Jim sees clients in person in San Antonio and by telehealth anywhere in Texas. He is trained in Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) and EMDR, and uses cognitive approaches alongside them.

    • Be aware that for a first course of ART, he generally recommends meeting in person, so he can watch how you are doing during the eye-movement sets. Whether telehealth suits your situation is decided when you first talk. His ART page explains why.
    • In network with Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, BCBS of Texas, TRICARE, Humana Military and TriWest; private pay is $130 a session.

Making online trauma therapy work

  • Privacy first. A parked car, a closed room with a white-noise machine outside the door, or headphones. Tell your therapist if you cannot guarantee privacy on a given day.
  • A plan for a disconnection. Agree in advance what happens if the call drops in the middle of difficult material. Usually the therapist calls your phone.
  • Your location. Your therapist will ask where you are at the start of each session, so they know where to send help in an emergency.
  • Screen setup. For eye-movement work, a laptop or tablet at eye level works better than a phone held in your hand.

Questions people ask

Can I see a Texas therapist while I am traveling out of state?

Usually not without the other state's permission. Licensure follows where you are physically located during the session. Some states allow short-term exceptions, so check with your therapist before a trip.

Is telehealth covered by insurance in Texas?

Most plans that cover outpatient therapy also cover telehealth, but the details depend on the plan. Call the number on your card and ask about "telehealth outpatient psychotherapy" with an in-network provider.
